Current Events #1- Regina What- 60-year-old lady freezes to death. Where- Back alley in downtown Regina. When- Monday, February 7th, 2011 Who- 60-year-old lady who claimed to not me homeless. Why- Saskatchewan has had extremes in weather that some people are not prepared for. She had hypothermia but they are not positive that that was the whole reason for her death. Psychology- Alot of the people who freeze to death in Saskatchewan are homeless. The executive director of Carmicheal Outreach in Regina says that homelessness is a complex issue and addictions, other mental health concerns, physical health issues and traumas play a part in the problem. This relates to Psychology because their brain decides what they do with their lives and when there are issues with the brain, that can sometimes conclude to them becoming homeless.
Current Events #2- Middle East What- Canadian woman's husband stuck in Libya Where- Libya When- The couple was married in Libya in 2009. She came back to Canada while he stayed behind and he has been there ever since. Who- Juma Sabtiu, he is a citizen of Ghana. Why- He was working for about 10 years in oil-rich Libya to support his parents and siblings because in Ghana, when you are the oldest you support your family. His wife (who is Canadian) has been trying to get him to become a citizen of Canada for a while but there has been complications therefore he is still there. Sociology- This event is related to sociology because it talks about the confusions that they are having with the governments, and the misconceptions they are having.
Current Events #3- Japan What- Elderly woman and her grandson were rescued from their wrecked house after being trapped for nine days. Where- Sendai, Japan When- Sunday, March 20th Who- 80-year-old woman and her 16-year-old grandson. Why- They were trapped in their kitchen after the disaster for nine days before the boy could get onto the roof to wave for help. Fortunately, they were by the refrigerator and survived on yogurt and other foods. Phsychology- This topic relates to phsycology because after being trapped for nine days, their brains started to function differently.
Current Events #4- Canada's Election What- Women Candidates speak out Where- Saskatoon, Saskatchewan When- Wednesday, April 20th Who- Saskatoon women’s organizations Why- They are trying to get more women engaged in the election. If there were more people involved in federal politics, they hope that it would be more focused on policies affecting families, communties, and environment and a fair economy. They also believe it would be more civil. Sociology- This topic relates to sociology because they want more women to colaberate with the men in politics to make the government stronger and better for everyone.
Current Events #5- Osama Bin Laden's Death What- Obama will not release Bin Laden death photos Where- White House, Washington DC When- May 5, 2011 Who- President Barack Obama doesn't feel it is right to release photos of Bin Laden dead. Why- There was a big debate about whether or not photos of Bin Laden shot dead in the head should be released to the public. Obama feels that the graphic photos should not be floating around because that is not who they are, and they do not trot that stuff around like trophies. However, many others believe they should be released, such as Sarah Palin, who believes that the photos should be shown to others who look to America for destruction. "No pussyfooting around, no politicking, no drama; it's part of the mission." Psychology- This relates to psychology because Obama has a different perspective than others do on the subject. They both make good points about why they should or should not be released, it is just that they all have a different mindset.
Current Events #6- Teacher Action in Saskatchewan What-Province-wide strike closes schools- Teachers urged to bargain Where- Saskatchewan When- May 25-26, 2011 Who- Saskatchewan teachers Why- The Saskatchewan's Teachers' Federation are bargaining for a raise in teachers' salaries. Schools across Saskatchewan were closed for two days when the teachers stood outside of the Legislature picketing, hoping to raise their salary by 5.5% over three years. Sociology- This situation relates to Sociology because of how the Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation and the government-trustee committee are trying to come to an agreement.
Current Events #7- Anything What- Leader penned by sask. teen arrives 14 years after his death Where- Beaubier, sask When- Thursday, June 9, 2011 Who- A letter from David Bercier was sent to his grandma, Sharon Solie, 14 years after he died, and 16 years after he wrote it. Why- David Bercier, who lived in Moose Jaw, drowned in 1997, at the age of 17. Two years before, he wrote a letter two himself talking about his short-term dreams, long-term dreams, and what he wanted to do with his life. This letter showed up in his grandmother's mail box on thursday, 16 years after he wrote it. The package also included a page of classmates comments towards him, about how funny and nice he was, as well as a school assignment with 12 lines that started out 'I am best at...' and 'I enjoy being...'. The question now is where has this package been since 1995, and how did it show up now. Sociology- This is a difficult subject, but I think it relates to sociology because of how highly David's classmates and family thought of him, and how much he was loved and admired.
